Jim Martin / Farrier in New Paltz, New York

Black Swan Farriery will work with all breeds and disciplines.

At your first appointment, I will evaluate your horse at the walk and trot, observing his gait and movements. An examination of his hooves can reveal much information about his balance and health. I will discuss any concerns you may have about your horse and offer suggestions for a course of action.

All shoes are hot forged for a precise custom fit to each of your horse’s hooves. Hot shoeing has been scientifically proven to be superior to cold shoeing. After being shaped, the hot shoe is briefly held to the hoof’s surface where it will cauterize the tubules of the hoof wall, killing bacteria and sealing in moisture. Because there aren’t any nerve endings where the shoe is placed, the horse doesn’t feel any discomfort. After the shoe is cooled it is “boxed and safed” by grinding the sharp edges and nailed to the hoof. This process might take longer than cold shoeing, but it gives a superior result.

Additionally, in certain cases of lameness, recovery, or damaged hooves, I will recommend glue-on shoes from Sound Horse Technologies.
