James Welz has been a barefoot hoofcare professional since 2000. He was one of the first in the USA to receive a higher education in Orthopedic Barefoot Hoof Trimming (certified in Germany, May 2001), and one of the first to begin a full-time career as a barefoot-only professional. His biggest influences include Dr. Robert Bowker, wild horse hooves from around the world, and the many horses he trimmed for decades, including champion competition horses. His approach is moderate, conservative, and flexible.

James trimmed continuously full time for clients in the Phoenix, Arizona area from 2000-2026. James & his wife Yvonne (creator of The Horse’s Hoof website and magazine) purchased their dream property in Marlin, Texas and relocated there in April 2026. James is now ready to lend his 26 years of barefoot trimming expertise to horse owners in Central Texas.

We put the shoeing needs of the horse first, quickly identifying any issues or corrections that need to be made. If it doesn't need to be done, we won't do it. We mostly work as a two man team and will take the time to work with the reluctant horse through training and behavioral understanding. If your horse needs additional trianing, we offer that as well.
