The professional staff at SMR Equestrian is committed to providing students with a safe and positive environment in which to learn and have fun. We focus on building a well-rounded horseperson by not only teaching students to ride, but also providing lessons in horsemanship, sportsmanship, and showmanship.

SMR Equestrian offers a comprehensive lesson program for children and adults (ages six and up) from beginner to advanced levels. SMR Equestrian is unique in its ability to take riders from beginning young riders to top show riders. Whether you are a beginner rider, pleasure rider, or show rider, we have a program suited for you. We have a number of quality school horses, from beginner horses to 3’ jumping horses*.

Our lesson program features small classes with no more than four riders in a lesson at a time, providing individualized quality instruction. In order to provide a safe environment that is conducive to learning, there are never more than five horses working in the arena during lesson hours.

Ascend Equestrian was founded on the principle of family, friends, and providing a safe environment in which to learn and have fun. We focus on building a well-rounded horseperson by not only teaching students to ride, but also providing lessons in horsemanship, sportsmanship and showmanship. It is with this focus that we build successful riders who are competitive both at the local and national levels and contenders at national finals year after year.

Ascend Equestrian offers a comprehensive lesson program for children and adults ages 6 and up, from beginner to advanced levels. Our lesson program features small classes with no more than four riders in a lesson at a time, scheduled according to age and level, providing individualized quality instruction for all riders. In order to provide a safe environment that is conducive to learning, there are never more than five clients riding in the arena at a time, a feature that is unique to our training program.

Beginner riders start off in a private lesson to learn the basics of steering, controls, and position, before progressing to a semi-private lesson. Lessons are grouped according to level, age and height jumping in order to maximize progress.

Our lesson times are as follows:

Private Lessons- 30 minutes
Semi Private with 2 riders- 45 minutes
Semi Private with 3-4 riders- 1 hour

In addition to time spent in the saddle, riders should plan to spend an additional 30-45 minutes before their lesson and 30 minutes to an hour after their lesson grooming, tacking, bathing, grazing, and caring for their horses. Initially, this process will be guided by one of our instructors or working students, with the goal of creating independent knowledgeable horsewomen and men who can care for their own mounts.

We offer several safe, quality school horses of all sizes, skills, and levels from beginner to advanced. We treat our school horses like our top show horses, providing for the best possible experience for our riders on horses that are happy, healthy and ready to perform their best for their lessons. Our school horses are never ridden more than 5 days per week and not more than once per day and have access to the same top care provided to our show horses.

We invite new clients to schedule an evaluation lesson to meet our horses and instructors and learn just how fabulous our lesson program is. This evaluation lesson also serves as an opportunity for our trainers to assess our new clients’ riding and ensure that we can provide the best possible horse and lesson suitable to their needs and goals. After the initial evaluation lesson, riders are required to sign up for a minimum of one lesson per week in order to continue in our program.

Forte's hunter, jumper, equitation riding lesson program offers experienced, professional staff focused on you. The program is run by USHJA certified instructor Allison Howson who holds a degree in Equestrian Studies degree from the University of Findlay, and has nearly 15 years of professional experience. Excalibur Horse Center offers lessons in hunters, jumpers, and barrel racing & gymkhana. We accept riders of all ages and skill levels, and offer both private and small group lessons.

Our trainer will work with you and your horse to help you reach your goals, whether you plan to compete, wish to improve your skills, or are simply looking for a fun recreational activity. For our students interested in showing, our trainer is available to accompany you at shows as well.

Kellyn Burtka’s experience in the equestrian field is long and diverse. Starting at an early age, Kellyn has pursued a single-minded goal of excellence in all things equestrian, and has competed in the Michigan Hunter Jumper Association circuit events, as well as showing in numerous divisions including Hunt Seat, Western Pleasure, and gymkhana at various breed-association and open shows across the state.

Kellyn’s formal education includes a degree in Animal Science and Agribusiness Management from Michigan State University with a specialization in horses. In addition, Kellyn studied at the renowned Enniskillen College in Northern Ireland, receiving training in Show jumping, Dressage and Thoroughbred racing, as well as the breaking and training of green horses.

Kellyn has a long history of training and teaching, including teaching courses in topics from horse selection and confirmation, to driving draft horses, to equine plant toxicology. Kellyn founded the Novi High School Equestrian Team in 1999, and coached the team until 2007. Not satisfied with being on a horse, Kellyn also founded the MSU Driving Club in 2005, and competed at the Great Lakes International Draft Horse Show & Pull.

Kellyn has worked with horsemen from around the world to put together a training and teaching program that focuses on problem-solving with a light touch and starting young horses under saddle with an emphasis on positive communication. Kellyn’s methods include the best elements of Natural horsemanship combined with traditional European techniques.
