Kemper Knoll Farm offers riding and driving lessons in a scenic location. Well trained horses are available for beginner to advanced riders. Darlene Kemper, the head instructor, has 30 years of experience training riders and horses, and holds a Master's Degree in Education. Coach Jeni Platt grew up on horseback on her family farm in Central Virginia where she participated in many equestrian activities. Jeni holds a BA in Psychology and a QMHP certificate in Virginia. She is also a certified Yoga Instructor and B4C Social Emotional Learning Facilitator. At SCS, she is the Operations Manager, Lead Horsemanship Coach, and Equine Specialist.

In our lesson program, students learn about horse behavior, care, grooming, and basic riding skills! We teach "horsemanship style" with an emphasis on safety and self awareness covering various topics, including horse caretaking, handling, and knowledge. There is riding of course but it is not our sole focus. We are always happy to work with any experience level and have fun!

SCS is inspiring the next generation of thinkers and doers through hands-on adventures! All activities are designed to foster critical thinking, socioemotional development, confidence, and teamwork. Classes are taught by a team of instructors with skills including groundwork, riding English and Western, games, confidence building, and more.

Youth ages 5 and up may join us for ninety-minute horsemanship lesson blocks that include both ground and riding instruction. We teach safety, groundwork, equine care and knowledge, equipment maintenance, and horseback riding. All classes are taught with an SEL focused approach and foster personal development. Limited adult lessons may be available, please feel free to reach out and ask!

SCS Equestrian Team tryouts are open to anyone attending horsemanship classes weekly. Travel Team members must attend class a minimum of 2x weekly and are eligible to participate in off-farm events such as trail rides, hunter paces, and horse shows. Ancillary Team members must attend class a minimum of 1x weekly and may participate in on-site team meetings and are eligible to "pick up" ride at horse shows on a case by base basis.... See More

Our lessons for beginners include ground time, grooming and tacking instruction. Once young riders are proficient in this process, then lesson time will begin when mounted. All riders need to wear proper riding boots and a safety approved helmet. New riders must have a copy of a current medical insurance card and a signed release waiver on file. Lessons may include mounted exercises as well as theory lessons (unmounted). We ride both in and out of the ring for a well-balanced riding education. Travelling to your barn for lessons and clinics is available. Please call for rates. 24 hour cancellation notice is required.

Baily Dent Equestrian is an established program located in just outside of Charlottesville, Va. at Millington Stables. Our facility boasts 50 stalls, 2 out door rings, spacious grassy turnout, and 1000+ acres of trails through Farmington Hunt Country. Baily Dent is our head trainer. She grew up riding and showing in Charlottesville, Virginia and has spent a lifetime showing at some of the most prestigious horse show in the country. Baily has successfully brought along many young horses and riders to achieve the same kind of success she has enjoyed throughout her career. Baily stresses good basics in her teaching and believes that this strong foundation is what brings riders success in and out of the show ring with their horses. Baily strives to use all forms of communication with her riders to identify how each individual learns best, be it visually, verbally or hepaticly.
