Horseback Riding in Oberlin, Ohio (Lorain County)

I can halter break foals, start horses under saddle, or finish a horse in any of the following disciplines; western, english, jumping, showmanship, contesting and trail. I charge $35 per hour and like the owner of the horse to learn my training techniques so they know what to do with the horse when they are working with them. I also do monthly training that requires the horse be boarded on out farm. $250 for full care board and $250 for training. I work with the horse at least 4 times a week. My main goal when training is to have a calm, respectful and willing horse on the ground and in the saddle. I believe the proper ground work is the key to most problems. I give lessons to beginners up to experienced riders. I also will give lessons to all ages; no on is too young or too old in my eyes. I prefer private lessons only but will give a group lesson up to two riders at a time. I charge $35 per private lesson and $25 per rider for a group lesson. Lessons usually last 1 1/2 hours because I guarantee an hour on the horses back.

I have 19 years of experience training horses/riders. I have had over 6 different personal trainers and I study John Lyons,Pat Parelli,Guy McLean, Chris Cox, Clinton Anderson, Craig Cameron and many others on a consistent basis. I believe you can never know everything and the same techniques do not work on every horse. I have shown in all of the above disciplines and have done very well.

At Sunset Stables we give instruction in huntseat, western, showmanship, trail (class and riding) offer lessons for the most nervous of beginner to more advanced riders who want to show on the circuit. We can get you to your very first show or for more experience riders offer the polish it takes for the winner circle. We enjoy showing but we put our focus on safe proper technique to make sure the rider and horse gets the most from the experience. We offer lessons from ages 4 and up. I have over ten years experience riding, including a period of employment as a trail guide. Lessons would be at your home/or boarding facility on your own horse. I do have a lesson horse available if needed. I showed western pleasure in 4-h, have some experience in cutting, reining and mounted shooting. Lessons are $25/hour with discounts for purchasing packages.

Training:I do not finish horses but I can help solve some problems you may be having. In addition I really enjoy working with weanlings and yearlings groundwork etc. I will come to you if you have a round pen or you can board your horse(s) where I keep my own. I charge $1=100 /week plus mileage. Off site or $50/week + board if you choose to do that.

Includes a ride/working with your horse 5 days a week for 1-2 hours
I will also offer specialized services such as stall cleaning, barn upkeep, feeding, horse/house/pet sitting ($15/hour) and excercise riding ($20/hour)

A teacher first and foremost, Kerry Varble combines a lifetime of experience in multiple disciplines including eventing, hunter/jumpers, mountain trail, and endurance, with a professional approach to the education of horses and riders. She holds a masters degree in education from Walsh University and a graduate certificate in the teaching of learners with mild/moderate disabilities from Baldwin Wallace University.

As a riding instructor, Kerry is able to transition her teaching skills to help students gain the knowledge, confidence and expertise to accomplish their riding objectives while enjoying the learning experience.

In addition to assisting students achieve their riding goals, Kerry has trained horses of all breeds for jumping, dressage, and mountain trail. She specializes in working with off track thoroughbreds, and she has worked with CANTER Ohio doing first rides off the track and training rides to help transition horses to new careers.

In 2021 Kerry was champion of the open training division of the NEOMTA mini trials series with her mare, Happy Eloise, that she purchased as a three year old at the 2017 Mountaineer racetrack auction. She currently trains with ICP4* certified instructor Dr. Susan Hines, and has worked with Jackie Smith of Stone Gate Farm, learning all aspects of running horse trials and shows.
