North Star Stables is an inclusive riding facility offering riding lessons for people of all abilities. Instructor Teresa Pilegaard teaches with a foundation of classical dressage and focuses on adapting her teaching style to the needs of each individual rider. A PATH International IT, Teresa constantly pursues excellence in her riding and instructing.

Riding lessons are available for students age 2 - adult. Therapeutic riding lessons are available to students age 4 and up.

Coach Jeni Platt grew up on horseback on her family farm in Central Virginia where she participated in many equestrian activities. Jeni holds a BA in Psychology and a QMHP certificate in Virginia. She is also a certified Yoga Instructor and B4C Social Emotional Learning Facilitator. At SCS, she is the Operations Manager, Lead Horsemanship Coach, and Equine Specialist.

In our lesson program, students learn about horse behavior, care, grooming, and basic riding skills! We teach "horsemanship style" with an emphasis on safety and self awareness covering various topics, including horse caretaking, handling, and knowledge. There is riding of course but it is not our sole focus. We are always happy to work with any experience level and have fun!

SCS is inspiring the next generation of thinkers and doers through hands-on adventures! All activities are designed to foster critical thinking, socioemotional development, confidence, and teamwork. Classes are taught by a team of instructors with skills including groundwork, riding English and Western, games, confidence building, and more.

Youth ages 5 and up may join us for ninety-minute horsemanship lesson blocks that include both ground and riding instruction. We teach safety, groundwork, equine care and knowledge, equipment maintenance, and horseback riding. All classes are taught with an SEL focused approach and foster personal development. Limited adult lessons may be available, please feel free to reach out and ask!

SCS Equestrian Team tryouts are open to anyone attending horsemanship classes weekly. Travel Team members must attend class a minimum of 2x weekly and are eligible to participate in off-farm events such as trail rides, hunter paces, and horse shows. We offer a fun atmosphere and learning experience for anyone interested in horses. We specialize in rehabilitation of rescue horses that are used in the riding programs. River Chase Farm brings together over 50 years of combined experience in riding instruction and horse shows. Our team of professional instructors provides something for everyone from the serious competitor to the weekend hobbyist . Many of our students compete in the VHSA and USEF horse shows. We offer flexible lesson times at reasonable rates with both private and group lesson options. Students must be at least 5 yrs of age.

Students are expected to arrive in time to groom and tack their horses and to care for the horses when the lessons are finished. For those who are unable to prepare and put their mounts away independently, private or semi-preview lessons are provided.
