I have been teaching riding lessons since I was 16 years old and have taken a year’s hiatus from teaching to focus on my career. I am now ready to start teaching again. I am looking to teach people on their own mounts, though would consider a limited number of clients to ride my (wonderful) mare.
I am fully educated to instruct riding lessons, as I graduated with a degree in Recreation and Leisure with a concentration in Equine Studies from Houghton College. The focus of my equine studies was not only in horsemanship and barn management, but in teaching. My studies included becoming a level 4 CHA Certified Riding Instructor (the highest attainable level for one discipline), clinics with Olympic coaches and a course on educational psychology. The greatest value I received from my education was not becoming a better rider, but that I became a teacher.
I have the ability to instruct riders of all levels and all ages. I also have experience working with those who need some confidence building. My focus is always on partnership with the horse and how our bodies relate to the horses. I develop programs and exercises based on each riders needs in order to achieve success. My goal is for each lesson to build upon the last, for my student to take something away from each lesson, and to make it all FUN!
I have been riding since the age of 3, and began serious instruction at the age of 8. My base of knowledge all stems from classical dressage and branches into hunters, jumpers, eventing, and some western. I have ridden not only with Olympic coach Walter Zettl, but also with Olympic rider Chris Kappler. When I moved to Virginia I was a working student for an Advanced level eventer. This experience allowed me to have coaching from her, as well as be present when she was having lessons from greats such as Jimmy Wofford.
My extensive riding background and my education in teaching and how people learn equips me with the tools to be an excellent instructor. My outgoing, energetic personality draws students into learning and puts them at ease.

Terri Young trains horses and teaches riders of all levels. She specializes in bridging the gap between the local Virginia show circuit and US Equestrian Federation-rated shows. Terri grew up competing in equitation and hunters in New Jersey before spending several years working for dressage trainers, including Lendon Gray. After graduating with a degree in business management from Syracuse University, she moved to Germany where she trained and showed jumpers before returning stateside to open her own stable. She is a USEF “r” judge and a member of the USHJA Youth Council. Lauren’s family got their first horses when she was 18 months old and she has been heavily involved with them since. Training under world class instructors in the U.S Pony Club, achieving her C3/HB and C3 Dressage, Lauren has trained horses from the first time being haltered to 3rd level dressage. She has experience with severely abused horses, off-the-track racehorses, top level event horses, and everything in between. Lauren has been teaching English style riding since she was a teenager and began training students in Western style in recent years. Taylor is originally from North Carolina. At the age of four, she started riding horses and by age six she was doing low level barrel jackpots to compete at on weekends. Her love for horses stemmed from there and she learned everything she could from anyone and every horse she could ride or work with!

Taylor began training and colt starting around the age of fifteen with the help of her own trainer until she ventured off by herself to start training for various clients. She eventually went on to compete in and out of state state barrel racing competitions until she turned seventeen. At that point, she focused more on training and flipping horses.

Her love is not just for barrel racing, but also for pole bending, trail riding, colt starting, and restart projects! The most gratifying part of Taylor’s passion is not only helping owners/riders build confidence and skill but also their horses.
