Better than lessons - you and your kids will appreciate a trail ride over boring arena circles any day! Riders will learn basic handling skills in a far more beautiful environment. Try a guided horseback ride along trails that wind through our lush forests. Great for riders of all ages and skill levels (kids to adults; beginner to advanced). This is a small privately owned ranch. All trail rides are guided at a "walk only" by an experienced and knowledgeable trail guide who leads riders in small groups of 1-4 riders. We specialize in confidence building. We ride rain or shine; we use comfy waterproof lap blankets to keep our riders warm and dry in poor weather conditions. We have a huge variety of ride types, from one half hour to all day rides, we'll even plan an overnight camping trip. Get more than just a trail ride, as we sponsor seasonal treat rides (egg hunt ride, trick n treat ride, candy cane ride, patriotic ride, and sweetheart ride) and riding in prize/raffle/poker rides sponsored by others. We also offer family or small group rides for birthdays, campfires, lunch/dinners, picnics, wine tasting (age appropriate), scavenger hunts, and more! We will design a special riding event for you. We can short ride local or haul our horses to any of the many local trailheads. We adjust our rides to rider needs and wants - we can ride flat trails to high back country in the mountains with amazing scenic views. Rusty Bar Ranch has been approved and is now endorsed by Time to Ride, a division of the American Horse Council. There was rigorous criteria which had to be met, including being licensed, insured, having a proper facility, completing Safe Sport training, a criminal background check, and membership in at least one training association such as the Certified Horsemanship Association.

Rusty Bar Ranch features the only training simulator in Washington state. Sheena has seat, bit, leg, head and neck sensors and is non-judgmental. She will show you everything you are doing correctly as well as areas needing improvement. She goes English and Western, never tires, and can be ridden when temperatures exceed what is considered safe for lessons as she lives in a climate controlled room.

Lessons are taught from the ground up. Students learn how to halter, lead, groom, tack and ride. All lessons start out as private lessons, meaning the rider, horse and instructor are the ONLY ones in the arena or training area. Rusty Bar Ranch is a multi-discipline training facility, teaching English, Western, agility, trail, obstacles, safe and sane gaming, safe horsemanship, in preparation for everything from competition to trail riding.

I had the great fortune of growing up in a thriving and inspirational pony club family My mother and mentor, Betty Tukey, taught me everything there is to know about horses and teaching. She furthered my learning by sending me to work with instructors like: Melissa Beardsley, Tami Masters, Kari McClain, Bruce Davidson, Kim and Dietrich Von Hopffgarten.

From these great teachers, I learned to be an effective rider with great horsemanship skills. I want to share the wisdom that I gained from these instructors through my teaching.

Pony club has always played a major role in my life and I grew up competing in rallies and Eventing, Through these experiences I learned about being a competitor, teamwork, responsibility, horsemanship and leadership. I graduated from pony club with my 'B' which establish my strong base of knowledge. Now I have the fortune to give back and play a leadership role in pony club. I am the Regional Instructional Coordinator for the NW region and the DC of the local pony club chapter - Skagit Valley. I hope to pass on the values and learnings that I grew up with in pony club and give this to my students. .

Education has been the basis of which I stand. With my BA in Psychology and my Masters in Education I apply these classroom management skills to my arena lessons. After grad school, I traveled the world raising my kids for 12 years. I was able to further my riding experiences with lessons in France, England,Germany and Russia.

I have been diversified my talents in riding from: pony club, eventing, dressage, working with the Riding for the Disabled in England, to running a small riding lesson and vaulting program from my home .

Now I have come home, at have been working with Stephanie Blockley Clarke at Meadowgate for the past 4 years. Stephanie has taught me how to ride with more finesse and with more compassion. With her teaching I have taken my Dutch Warmblood - Aslan - up to 3rd level in dressage.

My road to being a riding instructor has not taken the normal path, by I have taken the many elements of my life to become a strong teacher. I combine all these elements (dressage, jumping and pony club) in my teaching to provide a very well rounded lesson program.... See More

Stephanie teaches riders from beginners through skilled on their own horses or reliable lesson horses at all levels - first the principles of control of the horse's body and influencing its attitude from the ground, later astride, and then using the logical building blocks of dressage to give riders a good foundation of balance, control, and independence of aids to pursue whatever avenue of the sport of horseback riding they choose to follow. Although a trainer and competitor of Dressage horses to the FEI level for over 35 years, Stephanie also teaches students who choose to specialize in hunt seat, jumping, western, western dressage, or gaming. Her assistant trainer Ann Tukey Shideler has taken over the instruction of jumping. Meadowgate is the new home of the reorganized Skagit Valley Pony Club.
