At Big Star Ranch, our focus is not just riding, but the whole horse experience. Our students learn how to halter and lead their horse, groom, saddle and ride. But there is so much more to horses!

They also learn how to "read" their horse. Learning how horses communicate helps with so many other aspects of everyday life. Our students learn how to be a better friend, increase their coordination, learn creative problem solving, better their communication skills, and see how they impact their world.

Some of our students are here for the physical benefits. Riding and working with horses can build core strength, muscles, flexibility and coordination.

We ride various beautiful trails in and around Lyons, near Silver Creek Falls, a beautiful park with waterfalls, Salem, Portland, and will trailer as far south as Kalamath Falls.

I offer instruction in classical dressage-based horsemanship for any level of rider. My methods are based on 'Old World' military horsemanship that takes the techniques of training horses for jousting, mounted archery, mounted combat, etc. and adapts them to practical horsemanship. These methods are rooted in centuries of study in the nature and biomechanical interplay between horse and rider, handed down from master to student, throughout most of recorded history. No force or coercion is used in this style of training, but rather the goal is trust and forming a partnership, conditioning and making the horse supple, with the goal of improving their ability to carry the rider, athletically, for many happy years. If this sounds like the better aspects of what is now called "Natural Horsemanship, well the classical masters had a name for it, they called it "Horsemanship". :)

Horse Riding lessons for all ages from 4years and up. Total beginners who have never been around horses to more advanced riders who are looking to further their riding skills and move forward into competition.

I offer private lessons to all age groups. For younger children I’ve found that 30 minute hands-on lessons which include grooming, leading, tacking-up, untacking, and learning basic riding skills is great for the first time or 2.

For older kids and adults I offer an hour long lesson which include more saddle time and more in-depth training, Which Includes focusing and working more on balance, communication, seat/posture, leg aids and much more.
Lesson ponies available or haul ins welcome
I can also travel to you by prior arrangement and travel fee may apply

Mara wasn’t born on a horse but was going on trail rides at 6 months of age. She had her 1st pony at 18 months and was taking a stool out to get on him by 3 years old. She showed a neighbor horse at 5 and was trail riding her own pony by then.
At 7 she started formal riding lessons with Sue Woodson, an Equitation trainer in Forest Grove. She rode all 3 seats, western, huntseat, and saddleseat, at class A Morgan shows with Sue until she was 12 when Sue retired. The next year she rode with Margie Burgette, then with Bill Fields, Diane Guick, Helen Crabtree, and Susie Parks who were all Equitation instructors. She finished out her juvenile years with Sara Plumley when they went to the Morgan Grand National and World Championship show and placed 5th in the 17 and under World Champion English Pleasure class in 1991. The following year, 1992, with Carmen Hobson, she placed 3rd-7th in Saddleseat Equitation and 7th in English Pleasure. All while giving lessons for her mother at Gene and Kathy Vandyke’s Beaver State Morgan Farm.
Lorraine Hill was a trainer at Arrowcrest Stables in Wilsonville when Mara was asked by the owner to come and ride juvenile and amateur on his Saddlebreds. She showed with them for 5 years in California, Oregon, Washington, and Nevada. After highschool she went to Wisconsin with Lorraine Hill to work as an instructor and apprentice trainer.
She spent a year as assistant trainer for Bruce Dixon and Jennifer Dixon and as 1 of 4 riding instructors at the Menlo Circus Club in Atherton, CA.
In 2003 her young Morgan stallion placed 3rd in the 3 year old Western Pleasure Stallions and Geldings class at the Morgan Grand National and World Championship show. During 2001-2003, Mara rode with Andy Marlette in Minnesota.
2004 she worked as trainer/manager for Bob Pylman and Kaye Reed of Pylman Quarter Horses and rode with Bob’s son Kurt Pylman who specialized in Roping and Reined Cow Horses.... See More
