We are a small, family owned, family and faith oriented farm with a close knit staff and volunteers who are here because they love horses and people. Our classes are small (mostly one on one with an instructor), resulting in close personal attention during lessons. Our horses are tried and true safe lesson horses.Our instructors offer a breadth of experience from eventing, jumping, English equitation, to western pleasure. Lunar Winds Stables' lesson program is based on training ideals that strengthen bonds and communicate with horses through their mind, voice, emotions, and body language. Through riding, they learn how their seat affects the horse, and learn how to recognize different types of horse behavior and what could be done to make problem behaviors better. Here students learn groundwork as well as disciplines such as; Western pleasure/ horsemanship, contesting, English pleasure/ equitation, Hunt seat, and Jumping. I've been riding in dressage and eventing for 10+ years, have a background with United States Pony Club, and worked for various barns over the years. This has given me a well rounded experience of teaching, riding, and horse care. I am offering lessons and training to any variety of horses and ponies and people. I've taught 6 y/o to 60+ y/o with varying levels of experience, and I've worked with OTTBs, foals to yearlings, and ponies. In my lessons, I hope to create a conversations where questions are encouraged, and the rider and horse are comfortable and relaxed. I have been riding and showing horses for over 20 years. I have experience training everything from hunters and jumpers to throughbreds at Darby Dan Farms. We provide lessons for the beginner through advanced rider, focusing on the importance of a correct seat for successful communication with your horse. Whether you prefer Western or English disciplines, we will help you communicate clearly with the horse for balanced and collected movement. Some people call this 'centered riding' and some call it 'biomechanics,' we call it solid horsemanship. We provide lessons on our horses or you can load in.

For those starting out in horse riding, we will provide you instruction on horse care, grooming, haltering and leading a horse. We will show you how to tack up, and we will discuss the horse's structure and the biomechanics of riding. We want you to learn the cues for riding, when to apply them and why they work. Under saddle you will learn how to balance upon your horse and communicate with your horse through your hands, seat and legs. We will provide you training in walk, trot and canter in an arena setting and then move outside of the arena for more challenge.

For the intermediate student who currently rides and wants to expand their ability, we will further develop your seat with balance and agility exercises. You can learn flying lead changes, dressage patterns or how to jump - anything is possible once you have confidence in your seat. Old Oak Farm is the zebra in a herd of horses when compared to the typical show barn. We specialize in more individualized lesson plans and training programs that are able to fit the specific needs of our diverse cliental. Our trainer Denise Phillips has a background that consists of riding and training hunters, jumpers and equitation horses. During her competitive years she qualified for IHSA Nationals at Kenyon College and as an adult trained with Pamela Graham (hunters and jumpers), Jen Nadalin (hunters and jumpers) and Leslie McDonald (dressage).

Denise's teaching philosophy involves designing a system based on how riders learn best and has evolved into really helping her students "learn to feel" and develop problem solving skills thus enabling them to ride any kind of horse. Working with many different horses and lots of young and green horses requires solid basics that can then be adapted to each unique horse and rider combination.

We have a very developed system for working with many different types of horses and riders. We teach clients how to bring out the best in their horses through consistent, thoughtful riding, and good barn management skills.
