Coach Jeni Platt grew up on horseback on her family farm in Central Virginia where she participated in many equestrian activities. Jeni holds a BA in Psychology and a QMHP certificate in Virginia. She is also a certified Yoga Instructor and B4C Social Emotional Learning Facilitator. At SCS, she is the Operations Manager, Lead Horsemanship Coach, and Equine Specialist.

In our lesson program, students learn about horse behavior, care, grooming, and basic riding skills! We teach "horsemanship style" with an emphasis on safety and self awareness covering various topics, including horse caretaking, handling, and knowledge. There is riding of course but it is not our sole focus. We are always happy to work with any experience level and have fun!

SCS is inspiring the next generation of thinkers and doers through hands-on adventures! All activities are designed to foster critical thinking, socioemotional development, confidence, and teamwork. Classes are taught by a team of instructors with skills including groundwork, riding English and Western, games, confidence building, and more.

Youth ages 5 and up may join us for ninety-minute horsemanship lesson blocks that include both ground and riding instruction. We teach safety, groundwork, equine care and knowledge, equipment maintenance, and horseback riding. All classes are taught with an SEL focused approach and foster personal development. Limited adult lessons may be available, please feel free to reach out and ask!

SCS Equestrian Team tryouts are open to anyone attending horsemanship classes weekly. Travel Team members must attend class a minimum of 2x weekly and are eligible to participate in off-farm events such as trail rides, hunter paces, and horse shows. Tim prides himself in his dedication to ethics, professionalism, and an honest straight-forward approach. He believes that the care of the animal is a priority and he puts the mental and physical well-being of the horse above all other aspects of training. He listens to the goals of the owner, and assesses the talents of the horse to delvelop a realistic training program for each team.
After graduating from Virginia Tech with a Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science, Tim spent the next 4 years working with some of the top trainers in the country including; AQHA Professional Horsewoman of the Year, Gretchen Mathis who has more than 20 years of experience judging, All-Around trainer, Geno Spagnola, Western Pleasure trainers Carl Yamber and Wade Black. Most recently, Tim worked for Jim McKillips and Rita Crundwell, one of the AQHA’s top breeders of World Champions.
Tim wants to encourage riders of all levels and disciplines to see what his training program has to offer. He offers training, lessons and coaching at shows, including showing in open classes, and starting young horses of all breeds. Templar Farm LLC is committed to training both horse and rider, of all levels, to their top potential. We offer both dressage instruction, as well as hunter/jumper. Our experienced trainers work with students just starting out, to advanced students looking to compete on the rated circuit. The premiere facility features 100’ x 200’ outdoor arena, 168’ x 65’ indoor arena with dust free footing and viewing area, and climate controlled lounge. Our lessons for beginners include ground time, grooming and tacking instruction. Once young riders are proficient in this process, then lesson time will begin when mounted. All riders need to wear proper riding boots and a safety approved helmet. New riders must have a copy of a current medical insurance card and a signed release waiver on file. Lessons may include mounted exercises as well as theory lessons (unmounted). We ride both in and out of the ring for a well-balanced riding education. Travelling to your barn for lessons and clinics is available. Please call for rates. 24 hour cancellation notice is required.
